To the outside world, it might look like magic: thousands of students from across the globe arrive in Germany every year, and each one is welcomed into a carefully chosen host family. But parents often ask the obvious question: How do you make that happen?
The truth is, it isn’t magic. It’s decades of experience, a dedicated team, and a network of families who genuinely want to welcome young people into their homes. At ASTUR, we place over 10,000 students annually — and behind each placement is a process built on care, trust, and attention to detail. Let’s take you behind the scenes.
A Ready Pool of Families, Not a Last-Minute Scramble
Unlike some providers who only start looking for a host family after a booking, ASTUR maintains a standing network. With more than 6,000 active host families across Germany, we’re always ready. These are families who have signed up not reluctantly, but enthusiastically, because they want to share their culture and open their home.
This is why we can guarantee placement. We don’t scramble at the last minute or rely on “welcome families.” Every placement is final and designed for the full program.
Understanding the Student First
Every successful match begins with the student. When a teenager applies to the ASTUR High School Program, we ask them to share more than grades or paperwork. We want to know their hobbies, interests, preferences, and personality. Students also prepare a short introduction video — a simple hello, an insight into their life, and a chance to let families see who they are as a person.
This step helps us go beyond the surface. We’re not just finding a room; we’re finding a home that fits.
Matching Families and Students Thoughtfully
Once we know the student, we look for a family that feels right. Coordinators consider dietary needs, allergies, pets, and practicalities like location and school. But they also think about personalities: is this a sporty student who might fit well with a family that spends weekends hiking? Or a quiet reader who would enjoy a household that values calm evenings at home?
The match is never random. It’s deliberate, thoughtful, and based on years of experience.
The Role of Local Coordinators
Behind every placement is a network of ASTUR coordinators across Germany. These are the people who meet families in person, conduct home visits, and know their local host family communities intimately. They don’t just approve a household on paper; they walk through the home, sit at the family’s kitchen table, and talk to them face-to-face.
Because they live in the same city, they also know the local schools, transport systems, and community resources. That knowledge makes the placement stronger — and provides an added layer of security for parents. Our ASTUR local organisers are truely local and not a few hundred kilometres away.
Placement as the Beginning of a Journey, Not the End of Service
For ASTUR, placing a student with a host family is not a box checked off a list. It’s the start of a relationship. Coordinators stay in touch, checking in to make sure both sides are happy. Families know they can reach out if they have questions, and students know there’s someone local who understands them.
This ongoing support is why our placements don’t just succeed — they flourish. Parents often tell us that by the time their child returns, the host family feels less like a “placement” and more like extended relatives.
Why Scale Doesn’t Mean Less Care
Some parents hear that ASTUR places 10,000 students a year and worry: Won’t my child be just a number? The opposite is true. Our scale gives us the resources, experience, and family network to make sure no student is left behind. Each placement is personal, guided by coordinators who know both the student and the family.
Large numbers mean efficiency, but they don’t replace individual attention. If anything, they allow us to guarantee it.
Behind every ASTUR placement is more than logistics — it’s care, personal connection, and trust. Families can feel confident knowing that their child’s placement is not a last-minute scramble, but a carefully thought-out match, supported by local coordinators and strengthened by decades of experience.
