Breaking Barriers: Adiel’s Journey from Nottingham’s Private School to Cologne’s Public School

Hello, everyone! My name is Adiel, and I’m from Nottingham, UK. I want to share my incredible adventure as an exchange student in Cologne, Germany, where I discovered that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to the most amazing experiences.

Back home in Nottingham, I attended a private school, so when I found out I’d be attending a state public school in Germany, I was a bit hesitant. I had concerns about how different the school system would be and whether I would fit in. But as it turned out, my time in Cologne would prove to be an eye-opening and rewarding experience.

Upon my arrival in Cologne, I was greeted by my lovely host family, who immediately made me feel welcome and comfortable. They helped me navigate the city and its public transport, and their warmth and support made the transition to life in Germany much easier. The German school system, I soon discovered, was indeed different from what I was used to in the UK. There was a greater emphasis on practical learning and a more relaxed atmosphere in the classroom. However, I found that these differences were actually quite refreshing, and they allowed me to experience education from a new perspective.

My classmates and teachers in Cologne were incredibly friendly and supportive. They were genuinely interested in learning about the UK and my experiences back home, and I, in turn, was eager to learn about their culture and traditions. We shared stories and experiences, which helped bridge the gap between our different educational backgrounds. As I settled into my new school, I was surprised by how quickly I adapted to the changes. I embraced the German style of teaching and even found myself enjoying subjects that I had previously struggled with. The collaborative and open environment at school encouraged me to be more engaged in my learning, and I felt a newfound sense of motivation and curiosity.

Outside of school, I had the opportunity to explore the vibrant city of Cologne. From the stunning Cologne Cathedral to the bustling shopping streets, there was always something new and exciting to discover. I also got to experience local events like the Cologne Carnival, which was a fantastic introduction to the city’s festive spirit and lively atmosphere. Throughout my time in Cologne, I formed strong friendships with people from all walks of life. These connections not only enriched my experience but also helped me grow as an individual. I learned the importance of being open to new ideas and challenging my preconceived notions, which allowed me to see the world from a broader perspective.

As my exchange program came to an end, I realized just how much I had gained from my time in Cologne. I had not only broadened my horizons but also discovered a newfound appreciation for different educational systems and cultures. My experience in Germany had taught me to embrace change and be more adaptable, qualities that I know will serve me well in the future. Looking back, I am incredibly grateful for my journey in Cologne and the invaluable lessons I learned. My time in Germany was a testament to the fact that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to the most unforgettable adventures. To my wonderful host family, my friends, and everyone I met along the way, thank you for making my experience so memorable. Cologne, you will always have a special place in my heart.
