Hola, amigos! My name is Diego, and I’m 17 and from Mexico City. I want to share the rollercoaster journey of my five-month exchange experience in the charming town of Fulda, Germany, with the help of ASTUR. Despite a rocky start, my time in this picturesque town turned out to be an adventure I will never forget.
Initially, I was supposed to go on an exchange program with another provider, but unfortunately, it got canceled at the last minute. I was devastated and thought my dream of studying abroad was over. But then, ASTUR swooped in like a superhero, placing me in Fulda in record time. Little did I know that this unexpected twist of fate would lead me to one of the most amazing experiences of my life. As a city boy, I was nervous about living in a small town like Fulda. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to adjust to the slower pace and close-knit community. But to my surprise, I quickly discovered that small-town life in Germany is very different from what I was used to in Mexico.
My host family in Fulda welcomed me with open arms, and their warmth and hospitality made me feel right at home. They showed me around the town and introduced me to its beautiful baroque buildings, which I instantly fell in love with. I was fascinated by the rich history and architectural beauty that surrounded me. School in Fulda was an entirely new experience for me. My classmates and teachers were friendly and supportive, which helped me settle in quickly. As I worked on improving my German language skills, I found that people in Fulda were patient and understanding, making the learning process a lot more enjoyable.
What really captured my heart, though, was the stunning green landscape and the great outdoors that Fulda had to offer. Coming from a bustling city, I was amazed by the tranquility and beauty of the natural environment. I spent my weekends exploring the nearby forests, parks, and walking trails, often accompanied by my host family and new friends. I also had the opportunity to participate in local events and festivals, which gave me a unique insight into the culture and traditions of Fulda. I was particularly fond of the town’s Christmas market, where I got to sample delicious German treats like Lebkuchen and Glühwein (thos one without alcohol of course).
As my time in Fulda came to an end, I realized that I had grown in ways I never thought possible. I had learned to adapt to a new environment, embrace a different culture, and step out of my comfort zone. I had also gained valuable life skills, such as independence, resilience, and open-mindedness. Looking back, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to study in Fulda and for the support of the ASTUR program. My five-month adventure was a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most unexpected experiences can turn out to be the most rewarding.
To my wonderful host family, my friends, and the lovely people of Fulda, thank you for showing me the beauty of small-town life in Germany. As I return to Mexico City, I carry with me cherished memories and life lessons that will stay with me forever. And to Fulda, I say, hasta la vista, and I hope we meet again soon!
